Wealth of the United States Essay -- essays research papers

Wealth of the United States   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  There is a problem in the United States that is growing and is causing issues in our country, but not everybody knows about it. The problem is the distribution of wealth in our society and the world as a whole, and how it is getting worse. Some people would say that it is an inequality due to the needs of the society, while others would say it is to the needs or individuals. This causes even more problems because of there being more than one supposed reason for the issue at hand. The problem is that the distribution of power is possibly starting to be lopsided, and for many reasons. There are two main views of why this is happening, the functionalist perspective and the conflict perspective, and they differ in many ways on what is wrong, why it is wrong and what to do about it.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  One of these groups, the functionalists, view that the uneven distribution of wealth is due to the fact that the cream rises to the top and the people who have money and prestigious positions are the ones who are capable of getting the job done. Functionalists see that there are 3 things that are intertwined with each other; wealth, power, and prestige. These three things are rewards for people who are of good character, eg: people with advanced knowledge, hard workers, and people who can take on responsibility. This whole perspective is more merit based than anything and tells people in the society that they get w...

Hybrid System for Automobiles

As you will well appreciate, the issue of hybrid automobile systems has gained increased prominence in the recent past. This is as a result of the drawbacks associated with the conventional automobile systems currently in use and the potential benefits that hybrid systems can offer. At present, our company, like many automobile manufacturers, produces vehicles that run on the conventional internal combustion engine. Since this involves the combustion of fossil-based fuels such as gasoline and diesel, it is associated with the emission of noxious gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and waste hydrocarbons that significantly compound the problem of global warming in addition to increasing the risk of heart, lung, respiratory and eye illnesses.Fossil fuels are also manufactured from oil, which has recently been the subject of steep price hikes that affected many motorists.Hybrid systems are not only cleaner but also incur cheaper operational costs. They would gi ve our company an opportunity to demonstrate its social responsibility and commitment to the environment and generate positive PR spin offs for it. It would also help the firm generate more sales revenues and to maximize its profits.Towards this end, I have prepared a proposal that seeks to design, develop, and implement an automobile hybrid system to be incorporated into our vehicles. Given the time schedule, reliability, schedule visibility, clarity of technology and user requirements associated with the development of the proposed system, we propose to use a throwaway prototyping model, a type of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC).The entire project is expected to take one year, and will involve experts drawn from the different functional areas of the organization as well as outside consultants. Other resource requirements will include finances to purchase raw materials and modify existing production facilities.Given the unmistakable benefits that the hybrid automobile sys tem offers, there is no doubt that the benefits that our company will reap from its implementation will outweigh the costs by far. I will be glad to clarify or discuss with you any issues appertaining. Thank you.

Tribute Speech to Steve Jobs - 2556 Words

Tribute Speech to Steve Jobs Steve Jobs was like the Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and the Albert Einstein of our time. He not only innovated personal computing, but personal media and communication, iTunes which became one of the most popular music and video retailers and Pixar which was one of his side projects had become one of the greatest animation digital movie creators and software. But all that is a just part of the list of his legacy, because in the end he still left behind Apple which is world’s most valuable company, which is valued at $350 Billion Dollars. Judging from initial reactions, many critics were convinced that Steve Jobs had brought another revol utionary product to American consumers. Despite the warm reception, however, the NeXT machine never caught on. It was too costly, had a black-and-white screen, and couldnt be linked to other computers or run common software. So therefore it failed. NeXT was not, however, the end of Steve Jobs. (Change Slide) In 1986, Jobs paid filmmaker George Lucas $10 million for a small firm called Pixar that specialized in computer animation. Over the next six years Jobs poured another $40 million of his own money into the company. That film was Toy Story, a huge box office hit. The share price climbed dramatically, and Job’s 80 percent stock in Pixar suddenly was worth $1 billion. (Just a little better than the power balls don’t you think). Revelations of Dark and Light in Heart of Darkness by...

Revelations of Dark and Light In the book, Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad we are introduced to the concept of light and dark as they relate to the people of Africa and the people of Europe. In the beginning of the book the intro gives an insight into the journey that the main character, Marlow, is about to embark on. Conrad symbolically introduces the sun setting on the river as Marlow enters the mouth of the Thames. Conrad reveals this allegory by indicating that Marlow is about to enter a dark place morally, and physically as a reference to the Negro people of Africa. Light and dark are used by Conrad to represent morality and immorality. The story takes a step back to Marlow in Europe†¦show more content†¦9). The true purpose of the book is to reveal to the European people that Africa is being raped by the ivory traders. Kurtz, the villainous ivory hunter, is portrayed in a captivating manner due to his eloquence. Kurtz is a representation of all European ivory traders, specifically Belgium, who journey to Africa in hopes of striking it rich. Europeans come to take the ivory, but while there, they destroy the land and kill the people. Marlow then meets an accountant after arriving at his post in Africa. The accountant seems to be a representation of the trading companies due to the fact that he is an accountant and dressed immaculately in all white. The trading companies just like the accountant only care about the money being made off of the ivory. The accountant is dressed so perfectly, however is corrupt on the inside. Light and dark is used to emphasize the thoughts of Europeans who thought that the industry of bringing ivory back from Africa was a noble endeavor as stated in King Leo pold II’s â€Å"The Sacred Mission of Civilization.† King Leopold II states, â€Å"But if, in view of this desirable spread of civilization, we count upon the means of action which confer upon us dominion and the sanction of right†¦our ultimate end is a work of peace† (pg.119). The need for dominance, but succumbing to monetary lusts is the same reason Kurtz is the exemplification

Rhetorical Analysis Of Frederick Douglass Use Of Diction

Frederick Douglass’ use of Diction Frederick Douglass was a great author who used a variety of literary devices to contribute to his overall writing. One of his main literary elements that he uses is diction. What is diction? According to Merriam Webster’s dictionary diction is the way in which words are used in speech or writing. Douglass’ use of diction helps emphasize key point about slavery that writes about. Also, diction helps to convey the message that Douglass is writing about. Douglass uses diction is to describe the struggles and experiences of his life. Lastly, through his use of diction, Douglass was able to reveal what truly happened to slaves in the south, as well as the corruption of the slaveholders. My first example of diction that Douglass uses is â€Å"†¦in all its glaring odiousness, that slaveholders have ordained, and by law established, that the children of slave women shall in all cases follow the condition of their mothers; and this is done too obviously to administer to their own lusts, and make a gratification of their wicked desires profitable as well†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (2) Here Douglass is describing how slaveholders have sex with the female slaves and abandon the children born from it. He uses words such as odiousness, lust, and wicked desires to show how the slaveholders use and abuse the slaves in their employment for their own gratification. By using the aforementioned words, Douglass try’s to convey to his target audience the audacity of these men who abandon

Empowering Students to Be Innovators free essay sample

But I have known many people salespeople, surgeons, journalists, scholars, even musicians-who did have them without being the least bit entrepreneurial. What all the successful entrepreneurs I have met have in common is not a certain kind of personality but a commitment to the systematic practice of innovation. † What Peter Drucker conveys is that besides acquiring entrepreneurial qualities, a person must be innovative to be successful. Innovation is the key trait of successful entrepreneurs . In the case study â€Å" Corporate entrepreneurship and innovation: The case of Google. Inc. written by Todd A Finkle, CEO Eric Schmidt says , â€Å"I looked at Google as an extension of graduate school; similar kinds of people, similar kinds of crazy behavior, but people who were incredibly smart and who were highly motivated and had a sense of change, a sense of optimism. It was a culture of people who felt that they could build things; they could actually accomplish what they wanted and ultimately people stay in companies because they can achieve something. † What Eric Schmidt conveys is that employees in Google behave like entrepreneurs; have freedom, crazy work habit, committed, innovative and so on. Innovation is key to successful employees not only in Google, but many companies. Innovation is therefore a common trait for successful person, name him entrepreneur or manager. Many books and articles provide an inventory of characteristics of an entrepreneur, like passion, commitment, achievement orientation, courage, risk taking and so on and on. However you ask any CEO / business owner, he will also describe the same characteristics for his managers, as we have seen what Eric Schmidt said above. What differentiates entrepreneur from a manager? Entrepreneurs create wealth and create jobs; managers support entrepreneurs in their journey. Therefore for managers to be successful in their journey with the entrepreneurs, they must also have entrepreneurial qualities. And innovation is the key characteristic. Having said this, students aspiring to be successful managers need to possess the qualities of an entrepreneur. At some point of time in their career/ life they may decide to be independent to create wealth and employment. How do they get these qualities? There is no course to teach to develop entrepreneurial qualities. They have to be inculcated and nurtured. How do we inculcate the characteristics? To understand the method , first let us understand what is entrepreneurship. Entrepreneur is the one who practices entrepreneurship which is defined next. Though there are many definitions by different authors, the one by Joseph A Schumpeter is widely quoted, which is â€Å" Entrepreneurship is an activity mainly concerned with innovations and the use of untried technologies; this process of replacing existing products , processes, markets, source of supply of raw materials, and existing businesses with better ones, is termed as â€Å" creative destruction† †. Peter Drucker in his book â€Å" Innovative entrepreneur † defines entrepreneur as innovator and according to him â€Å" Innovation is the specific tool of entrepreneurs, the means by which they exploit changes as an opportunity for different business or a different service. † Practice of entrepreneurship is therefore also practice of innovation. When a person develops entrepreneurial qualities, he practices entrepreneurship and innovation. Methodology of inculcating practice of entrepreneurship and innovation. As we said earlier entrepreneurship can not be taught; entrepreneurial qualities must be inculcated to practice entrepreneurship. There are two factors, external and internal, that facilitate development of entrepreneurial qualities. External factors are those eco systems such as governmental , social, educational institutions etc. The objective of this paper is to discuss the intrinsic factors that enable development of entrepreneurial qualities among aspiring students. Whenever we talk about internal/intrinsic factors, we refer attitude, motivation, perception, personality of the individuals and in our case here they are students. These are all inherent characteristics to be inculcated and nurtured by making them participate in entrepreneurial activities. One given fact is that management students have been trained in acquiring the knowledge and skills in managing business by virtue of their participation of management programme. While imparting them the knowledge and skills, the methodology may be innovative to nurture entrepreneurial qualities in them by making them participate in relevant exercises and activities. I give below simple steps that can easily be followed to empower students participate in entrepreneurial activities: Meeting an entrepreneur: First, students shall meet a successful start up entrepreneur and spend few days, say, a week to personally observe how he handles the issues. The experiential learning of their approach to finding solutions to various issues is very important. This exercise can be done as part of class assignment. The experiential learning will give the student opportunity to adapt the attitude and behavior to be entrepreneurial. Case study analysis: Second, students should be encouraged to participate very actively in case study discussions in different subjects, like marketing, business strategy, entrepreneurship etc. Many management institutes have the system of case study discussions. The instructors should facilitate students come up with innovative ideas. Here the training is required for the instructors to effectively make the students participate in case discussion. Case study discussion is a situation where positively students have opportunity to think laterally/ differently to come up with innovative solutions. Ideation: Third, students should be encouraged to come up with a viable business idea, as an independent entrepreneur or intrapreneur ( corporate entrepreneurship). The student and instructor interact frequently to identify what student is passionate about, academic subject, sports, entertainment. Student will be encouraged to ideate and come out with an executable business idea. Student may be passionate on something other than business also. How will he pursue the passion ? For example a student may be passionate on music. He should be encouraged to conceive an idea on how he will pursue this passion in future; how will he reach his audience. Ultimately to pursue the passion and improve and reach intended audience, his efforts should be sustainable. This idea to be translated into business idea, not just making profit, but much more than that. Student will be more innovative to execute his idea which he is passionate about. This practice of innovation will be useful to him to extend to other business ideas. Attitude and skills through business plan: The student has learnt business knowledge through the academic curriculum. Many institutes send him for internship for practical learning. To encourage the student to be confident that he has the talent, he should be asked to submit a business plan on the idea he has generated based on his learning of business modeling during the course. The instructor can give him practical inputs to enable him to make an executable business plan. Student becomes confident and his attitude to handle business independently becomes positive. This is an essential entrepreneurial quality a student should acquire. What I have discussed are simple methods and doable. While external eco system is important to enable developing entrepreneurial qualities, we, educational institutes and instructors, should inculcate the habit of acquiring entrepreneurial characteristics among the students. If the students are enabled to practice innovation and entrepreneurship, they continue this habit in their career. We may, thus, help more innovation in products, markets, process and so on contributing to the economy. Someday these experienced students will become independent to create wealth and create employment. It will be great if some of them start at an early stage.
